Rental Car Insurance in Montenegro, Plain English

What is included on every M.A.C.K. rental, what the Premium insurance (SCDW) upgrade actually does, and what insurance does NOT cover. Plain-English glossary, no fine print.

The short version

Every M.A.C.K. Montenegro rental comes with our Standard insurance, which includes Third-Party Liability (TPL, required by law), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), and Theft Waiver (TW). With Standard insurance your bill is capped at the excess if there is damage or theft.

You can upgrade to Premium insurance (industry name SCDW). On most car groups Premium removes the excess entirely, so if there is damage you pay nothing. Luxury car groups keep a smaller residual excess.

Below: the glossary, what is included on each tier, and what is NOT covered.

The 5 terms in plain English

TPLThird-Party Liability
If you damage someone else's car or hurt someone, that is covered. This one is required by law in Croatia, Albania and Montenegro, so every rental in the region must include it. Included on every M.A.C.K. rental.
CDWCollision Damage Waiver
If you damage the rental car in an accident, your bill is capped at the excess shown on your contract. You pay up to that cap and we cover the rest of the repair. Without CDW you would be on the hook for the full repair bill, so the cap is essentially a courtesy from the rental company. Included on every M.A.C.K. rental as part of our Standard insurance.
TWTheft Waiver
If the rental car is stolen, your bill is capped at the excess too. You pay up to that cap rather than the full value of the car. Included on every rental as part of our Standard insurance.
SCDWSuper CDW, our "Premium insurance"
The optional Premium insurance upgrade. It eliminates the excess on most car groups, so if there is damage you pay nothing at all. Luxury car groups keep a smaller residual excess. You can add Premium insurance at booking.
Excessalso called "deductible"
The most you would pay out of pocket if there is damage or theft. The amount varies by car category and is shown in your booking quote and on the rental contract. The fact that there is a cap at all is a courtesy from the rental company. Without these waivers you would owe the entire cost of the repair, so the excess cap is on your side. The Premium insurance upgrade removes that cap on most car groups.

What's NOT covered (the honesty box)

Honest disclosure

Two rows above are deliberately marked ❌: tires, windshield and undercarriage damage, and personal items inside the car. Most operators bury these in fine print; we surface them. You can buy explicit add-ons at the desk if you want to cover tires or windshield, and we recommend keeping valuables out of the car when parked. One important legal note: for any of the insurance to apply after an accident, you need a police report and an alcohol test taken at the scene, by the local police, at the time of the incident. This is the law in Croatia and the same standard applies in Albania and Montenegro. We are upfront about it because if you skip the police report or refuse the alcohol test, the insurance can be voided entirely, the cap stops applying, and you would owe the full repair. So always call the police, even for a small bump.

Common questions

What does the insurance cover? +
Every M.A.C.K. rental comes with Standard insurance, which includes Third-Party Liability (TPL, required by law in HR, AL and ME), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) for damage to your rental, and Theft Waiver (TW). With CDW and TW your bill is capped at the excess shown on your contract. The optional Premium insurance upgrade (industry name SCDW) removes the excess on most car groups so you pay nothing if there is damage.
How can I reduce the excess to zero? +
Add Premium insurance (SCDW) at booking. On most car groups Premium insurance removes the excess entirely. Luxury car groups retain a smaller residual excess. The exact figures for your car appear on the rental contract and quote.
What is the difference between Standard and Premium insurance? +
Both tiers include Third-Party Liability (required by law) and breakdown assistance 24/7. Both include CDW and TW so your bill is capped if there is damage or theft. With Standard insurance you pay up to the excess; with Premium insurance (SCDW) the excess is removed on most car groups, so you pay nothing.
What is NOT covered, even with Premium insurance? +
Damage to tires, windshield and the undercarriage of the car. Personal belongings inside the car. Parking fines. Fuel charges if you return the car with less than full. Tire and windshield add-ons can be bought at the desk if you want them covered.
What happens if I have an accident? +
Call the police first. Then call our 24/7 breakdown line. By law in Croatia (and the same applies in Albania and Montenegro), for any of the insurance to apply you need a police report and an alcohol test taken at the scene at the time of the accident. Skipping that step can void the insurance and you would owe the full repair. Take photos, exchange details with the other party, and we handle the claim from there. Standard or Premium insurance caps your liability at the excess shown on your contract; Premium removes it entirely on most car groups.
